First time I heard the term “domestic superhero” was on the local teenage TV show Life with Derek here in Canada. That afternoon, the two, stepbrother and stepsister were fighting over the project in their class (yes they are classmates too). One was given a chance to make her documentary film about the merging family which of course the two family’s set up and Derek of course was insisting on having his film “DOMESTIC SUPERHERO” be granted by their teacher, unfortunately only three students were picked to do their film..
Derek didn’t make it but I did. Well not on the film but here in my blog.
During the early days of this blog (not too long ago, in fact I just changed it some days ago) I used “The Journal of domestic [UN] Goddess” which I got from my then current reading Sophie Kinsella’s The Undomestic Goddess .
Although there is [UN], I know that Goddess is not appropriate to describe me so that leaves domestic as my tagline. But domestic can’t stand alone and watching that teeny weenie show that happens to be one of the kids I am looking after’s favorite afternoon shows. It saves me from thinking and you know how hard it is to think that’s why most of the blogs I visit especially Entrecarders have no latest updates. It’s hard to think whether for a post or okay this is for me, I am selling myself. I am having a hard time doing my about me page.
To cut it short, I grabbed Derek’s idea. I want to call myself a domestic superhero. I don’t know exactly what the teenager’s plan for his film but I saw his brother in the show wearing a cape and an eye mask And shouted “I AM DOMESTIC SUPERHERO!”
But me as an OFW (Overseas Filipino Worker) and working as a domestic helper which they beautify to Live-In Caregiver, I absolutely agree that the term suits for me especially because in our country (Philippines) we, domestic helpers are called THE NEW HERO (Bagong Bayani.)
